How the Caffè Nero referral works
This is about as simple as a referral gets. Caffè Nero's app carries a digital loyalty card and a voucher wallet; the referral drops a free drink voucher into that wallet once you have proved you are a real customer by buying something. There is no code, no form and no waiting period beyond the purchase itself.
- Open the link on your phone. It is a Caffè Nero app link — on a phone it opens the app or the right store listing. Opening it on a laptop and installing the app separately afterwards is the usual way people lose the referral.
- Install the Caffè Nero app and sign up. A new account is required; the welcome drink is for new app users.
- Make your first purchase through the app. Pay in the app or scan it at the till so the purchase registers against your new account.
- Claim the voucher. The free welcome drink appears in your app rewards. Redeem it on your next visit — you cannot use it on the qualifying purchase itself.
Both sides get a drink out of it: you get the welcome voucher, I get a referral reward. Caffè Nero funds both, so nothing about your coffee costs more for having used my link.
What else the Nero app gets you
The welcome drink is the reason you are here, but the app is worth keeping for the stamp card underneath it. Every barista-made drink earns a stamp, nine stamps earns your tenth drink free, and that free drink can be any size — no small-cup-only restriction, which is not true of every coffee loyalty scheme.
Put another way, the stamp card is worth about 10% back on every coffee you buy. Bring your own cup and it roughly doubles.
- Bring a reusable cup and you get two stamps instead of one. That halves the visits between free drinks — closer to a free coffee every five — and is worth considerably more over a year than any one-off welcome voucher.
- Stamps do not expire, so an occasional Nero habit still gets there eventually. The free-drink reward a completed card produces does have an expiry, so redeem it rather than hoarding it.
- Click & Collect lets you order and pay ahead and skip the queue, and orders placed that way still earn stamps.
Caffè Nero has stores in most UK town centres, train stations and airports, so unlike a regional roaster this is a scheme you can actually use wherever you happen to be. Coffee chains do revise these thresholds periodically, so treat the app as the live source if the number ever looks different to the one above.
If the free drink does not appear
App referral links are more fragile than they look. The link has to hand tracking data to the app store and then to the app itself, and there are a few ordinary things that break that chain. If your voucher has not turned up, it is almost always one of these:
- You opened the link in private or incognito mode. The tracking data rides in normal browser storage, and private windows throw it away. Use a standard browser tab.
- You installed the app from the store instead of from the link. Searching "Caffè Nero" in the App Store or Play Store yourself skips the referral entirely. Tap the link first, then install from where it sends you, without wandering off to other apps in between.
- The account is not new. An email address that has been registered with Nero before — even years ago — reads as an existing customer, and existing customers do not get a welcome drink.
- The purchase was not made through the app. Paying cash, or tapping a card without scanning the app at the till, leaves no purchase attached to your account for the voucher to trigger from.
Give it a little time before assuming something has gone wrong — the voucher is not always instant. If it still has not arrived after a day or so, keep your receipt and contact Caffè Nero through the app; they can look up the transaction and apply it manually.
Caffè Nero or Costa?
They are the two chains you will actually walk past, so it is a fair question. The schemes are closer than people assume:
- Caffè Nero: nine stamps earns your tenth drink free, and a reusable cup earns two stamps per drink.
- Costa: ten beans earns a free drink, and a reusable cup earns an extra bean — so a free drink every five purchases.
Nero gets you there marginally faster on paper; Costa has more sites, so in practice the winner is whichever one is closer to your route. Both welcome offers are for new app users only and neither stops you having the other, so there is a decent argument for signing up to both — the Costa invite code is here. If you want better coffee rather than more of it, 200 Degrees and Pact are the other two on the hub.
Conditions worth knowing
- New Caffè Nero app users only — an existing account cannot claim the welcome drink.
- The link must be used before you install the app, so the referral attaches to your new account.
- A first purchase through the app is required before the voucher is released.
- The voucher is for a drink; it is not exchangeable for cash or transferable to another account.
- Caffè Nero's referral message quotes a claim deadline of 31/12/2099 — their way of saying there is no practical expiry on this one, but the app's own terms are the ones that count.
- Caffè Nero can change or withdraw the offer at any time. What is in the app when you sign up is what applies.
Caffè Nero referral FAQ
What do I get?
One free welcome drink voucher, added to your Caffè Nero app after your first purchase through the app.
Is there a code to type in?
No. The referral is carried by the link — there is nothing to enter manually at sign-up.
When can I use the free drink?
On a visit after the qualifying purchase. The voucher lands in your app rewards once your first app purchase has gone through, so it is not something you can apply to that first order.
How does the stamp card work?
A stamp per barista-made drink, and nine stamps earns your tenth free — any size. Bring a reusable cup and Nero gives you two stamps per drink instead of one, which gets you there roughly twice as fast.
My voucher has not appeared — what went wrong?
Usually one of four things: the link was opened in private browsing, the app was installed from the store rather than from the link, the email had been registered with Nero before, or the first purchase was not paid through the app. Keep the receipt and Nero support can apply it manually.
Do stamps expire?
Stamps do not expire. The free-drink reward produced by a completed card does have an expiry date, so use it rather than saving it forever.
Can existing app users claim it?
No — the welcome drink is for new sign-ups. If you already have the app, the link will not credit a voucher to your account.
Does it work in Nero concessions and stations?
App stamps and vouchers work in Caffè Nero's own stores. Franchise counters and concessions inside other businesses do not always participate, so check before you rely on it.
What do you get out of it?
A referral reward on my side, same as the drink on yours. Nero pays for both and your coffee costs the same either way.
