How the Costa Club invite code works

Costa Club is a straightforward loyalty scheme: buy a handcrafted drink, collect a bean, and at ten beans you get a drink free. The invite code shortcuts the first stretch of that. Join through a member's invite, enter their code during sign-up, buy your first drink, and Costa drops 5 bonus beans into your account on top of the one you just earned. You are 6 of 10 beans in before you have finished the coffee.

1. Open the link on the phone you will use. It routes to the Costa app on the App Store or Google Play. Doing this on a laptop and installing the app separately later is the usual way people lose the referral.
2. Create your Costa Club account. Standard sign-up — email address, password, the usual details.
3. Enter invite code 6LAIL when prompted. If you miss the prompt during sign-up, you can still add it: go to Profile, then Refer a Friend or Enter Code. Do it before your qualifying purchase.
4. Buy a handcrafted drink. The bonus beans are released by a bean-earning purchase — scan the app at the till or in a Costa Express machine so it registers against your account.
5. Check your bean total. The 5 bonus beans plus the 1 from your drink should appear in the app. Costa's terms allow a short processing delay, so give it a day before worrying.

Both sides get something: you get 5 bonus beans, and I get 5 as the referrer. Costa funds both — it costs you nothing beyond the drink you were buying anyway.

What a bean is actually worth

Ten beans gets you any handcrafted drink, any size, free. That makes each bean worth roughly a tenth of a Costa drink — call it 30–45p depending on what you order, and rather more if you use your free drink on something large and elaborate rather than a small black coffee. Five bonus beans is therefore around £2 of value, which is not going to change your life, but it is real and it takes about ten seconds to claim.

Two details make the scheme better than it first looks:

• Reusable cups earn an extra bean. Use your own cup in store and you get two beans per drink instead of one — a free drink every five purchases rather than ten. If you are a regular, this is worth more than any invite code.
• Beans can be swapped for upgrades. Two beans buys a syrup shot, a dash of cream, an extra espresso shot or a dairy alternative, so you do not have to save all the way to ten if you would rather improve the drink in front of you.

Costa Club also includes a free cake on your birthday and occasional bonus-bean promotions and Treat Drops in the app. None of that depends on the invite code — it comes with membership.

If the bonus beans do not appear

Nearly every failed invite code comes down to the same handful of causes. Before assuming the offer is dead, check these:

• The code went in too late. It belongs in the invite code box during registration. You can still add it afterwards under Profile → Enter Code, but it has to be in before the qualifying purchase, not after.
• The purchase was not scanned. Beans come from the app being scanned at the till, or the order being placed in the app. Paying cash with the phone in your pocket earns nothing.
• The account is not new. An email already known to Costa Club counts as an existing member, and existing members cannot claim an invite reward.
• You are being impatient. Costa allows a short processing window. Give it a day before chasing it.

If the beans still have not landed, Costa's support team can look up the transaction — keep the receipt.

Costa or Caffè Nero?

The two chains you will actually walk past, and the schemes are closer than most people assume:

• Costa: ten beans earns a free handcrafted drink, and a reusable cup earns an extra bean — a free drink every five purchases.
• Caffè Nero: nine stamps earns your tenth drink free, and a reusable cup earns two stamps per drink.

Nero is marginally quicker on paper; Costa has far more sites, so the real answer is whichever sits on your commute. Costa Club terms worth knowing

This is a small offer with correspondingly small print, but a few conditions genuinely matter:

• New Costa Club members only — an existing account cannot claim an invite code reward.
• The code must be entered at sign-up (or under Profile before your qualifying purchase), not added afterwards.
• A bean-earning purchase is required before the bonus beans are released.
• Costa Club is for Great Britain residents aged 16 or over, per Costa's Club terms.
• Beans expire after 12 months of account inactivity, and a reward expires three months after it is issued.
• Costa can change or withdraw the scheme — the terms in the app at the time you join are the ones that apply.
