How the Zen referral works

Zen runs its refer-a-friend scheme through Mention Me rather than a code at checkout, which changes the order of operations. You register on the referral page before you order — if you go straight to zen.co.uk and sign up, there is nothing to attach the referral to afterwards.

1. Open the referral link and register your email. The page confirms the £40 voucher is reserved against your address. This is the step people skip.
2. Check availability and pick a package. Zen will show what is available at your postcode — full fibre where the network reaches, or an Openreach-based line otherwise.
3. Place your order and wait for installation. The reward is tied to your service going live, not to placing the order.
4. Choose your voucher. Within 5 days of going live, the reward lands. You then have 90 days to pick which retailer you want it from — over 100 to choose between.

Both sides get the same £40. Zen funds it, and there is no cost to you for having used a referral link.

What makes Zen different

Zen is an unusual ISP. It has been going since 1995, it is still independent and privately owned, it is based in Rochdale, and it competes on service rather than price. Three things genuinely set it apart:

• The Contract Price Promise — no mid-contract price rises. This is the big one. Most UK providers now bake in an annual increase partway through your contract. Zen's price is fixed for the life of the contract: what you agree on day one is what you pay in the final month. If you have been stung by a CPI-plus-3.9% letter, this is the answer to it.
• Which? Recommended Provider six years running — Zen states it is the only broadband provider to hold that record. Its customer service reputation is the reason people put up with the price.
• B Corp certified, and one of the few UK broadband providers rated green on Trustpilot.

Speeds run up to 2,300Mbps where the full fibre network reaches, and support is UK-based with a reputation for actually knowing what a router is.

The honest catch: Zen is not cheap

Worth saying clearly, because most referral pages will not. Zen is a premium provider and is rarely the cheapest option at any given speed. You are paying for the price promise, the support and the ethics — which is a perfectly good reason to choose it, but it is not a bargain.

The way to judge it is total cost over the contract rather than the headline monthly price. A cheaper provider that raises prices mid-contract can end up close to Zen by month 18, and you will have spent the difference on hold. But if your priority is the lowest number on the bill, Zen will lose that comparison and you should know that before you order.

Alternatives worth comparing first

Zen is not the right answer for every address. Two others on this site are worth checking before you commit, and both have referral offers of their own:

• YouFibre — up to £100 cash. The direct competitor if you want full fibre cheaper. YouFibre builds its own network rather than reselling Openreach, so it is usually faster and cheaper than Zen where it exists — but coverage is far more selective, and the referral reward now requires a 24-month contract. It also pays a cash transfer rather than a voucher, which is worth more in practice. Check your postcode on their network first; if they serve you and the price matters more than the price promise, YouFibre is the stronger deal.
• Starlink — 1 free month. The answer when fixed-line broadband is the problem rather than the price. If you are rural, at the end of a long copper line, or Zen's availability checker offers you something embarrassing, satellite sidesteps the ground network entirely. It costs more per month and needs hardware up front, but for a genuinely poorly served address it is often the only real upgrade. Also worth it as a failover line for a business that cannot afford to drop.

Rough rule of thumb: YouFibre if it reaches you and price leads, Zen if service and price certainty lead, Starlink if the ground network has let you down. Hyperoptic is worth a look too if you live in a flat or apartment block.

Conditions worth knowing

• New Zen customers only — existing customers cannot claim a referral reward on their own account.
• Register through the referral link before ordering. There is no way to attach it retrospectively.
• The reward is tied to the service going live. If the order is cancelled before installation, neither side is paid.
• Vouchers arrive within 5 days of go-live, and you have 90 days to choose your retailer.
• Each retailer's voucher carries its own terms once selected.
• Home and business broadband both qualify. There is no cap on how many people one customer can refer.
